In the frames of GES-REG project a seminar „Initial assessment of marine areas – status and harmonisation of the process in Northern Baltic“ will be held at the Ministry of Environment of Estonia on 23 May, 2012.

Topic
According to Marine Startegy Framework Directive (MSFD) Initial assessment of marine waters under national jurisdicion is due by July 2012. This process has been taken by EU Member States as high priority and great effort has been spent on compiling and synthesising existing information to cover all different aspects of marine environment. Important step in preparation of Initial Assessment reports should be the harmonisation of approaches and methods between Member States sharing the same marine area.
The aim of the seminar is:
- To inform about the status of preparation of MSFD Article 8, 9 and 10 reports in different member states sharing the northern Baltic Sea,
- To compare and harmonise the approaches and methodological standards used for drafting the Initial Assessment report including presentation on analysis of national IA reports,
- Discuss the role and importance of regional marine conventions (HELCOM) as coordination forum for activities related to assessment of the state of marine environment,
- To share the findings and discuss consequenses for the further process of drafting programme of measures and revising the marine monitoring programmes.
One day seminar will include national presentations from Estonia, Finland, Latvia and Sweden as well as group discussions on relevant topics with development of recommendations for finalising the national IA work.
Seminar is organised by Central Baltic INTERREG IV A project GES-REG (Good Environmental Status Through Regional Cooperation and Capacity Buiding) and hosted by Estonian Marine Institute, University of Tartu. The coffee breaks and lunch during the seminar will be covered by the host.
Language of the meeting will be English.
